Creating Safe Spaces for special-needs students
The burden of educating students with disabilities, in informal areas, is often on families who prevent them from going to school. However, the situation becomes harder when schools willfully refuse to admit special-needs students due to ignorance and misconceptions. This is the case in Kariobangi where schools and parents deny special-needs students the opportunity to access education.
At Hands of Love we do not turn such students away; because they are a part of our community and play a significant role in helping us learn kindness and empathy. Pinches and Fred are both 6-year-old boys with special needs who joined Hands of Love this term. Having other special needs students at our school has shown that their presence helps enrich the educational experience for everybody. In the end, when we all understand and support them, the learning space becomes a safe environment.
